InsidePTI | Keeton Seed Firmer Study Results ‣ Corn
One of the most common issues during planting is when seeds don't land at the bottom of the furrow where they belong. This can create an air pocket underneath the seed, not allowing it to take up as much moisture as it should. In this multi-year study, we're exploring how we're seeing Keeton Seed Firmers solve this issue and the overall impact shown on both yield and economics.

It was my pleasure to meet you a couple years ago in Eau Claire Wisconsin. Something that I thought of through this video, this last spring the ground was wet and cold. Farmers up here who used APSA80 on it for a couple years said that the ground was ready to go two to three weeks ahead. They showed us how much soil got conditioned through the use. Which in the heavy clay, that was impressive.

How do you think this system would work in a pasture? Would the perennial roots help with wicking the water upward, no matter the time of year? And how much more did the components cost per acre to allow you to irrigate with your tile drainage?

I was just thinking about this today, as heads get bigger, the “dumber” the data gets. We’re making decisions based on more diluted down maps. 6 row corn head machine makes more “accurate” yield maps than 12 or 16 row.

What cover crops were used? N immobilization is expected from grass cover crops like rye. Would include a winter-hardy legume to prevent immobilization. Here in the southeast, we typically see mild to substantial yield improvements w cover crops.

It is not the density of the soil that should be controlled, but its porosity, keeping the waterproof soil aggregates intact! The "cornerstone" destroys them with the help of a furrow sealing device, the specific surface area of the aggregates increases and the available water becomes inaccessible. The experience spent in the basement is proof of this.

What moisture is needed for seed germination? Water in the soil and in a bucket are not the same thing. A model of an optimal seedbed is proposed, consisting of the subseminal layer, condensation layer, transmission layer, organic mulch and row-to-row layers. The existing generally accepted model of the seedbed is fragmentary, there are no cause-and-effect relationships between the structure of the bed layers, their functions and the phenomenon of seed germination. The quality of the bed structure is assessed according to subjective parameters: "good contact of seeds with the soil", "optimal re-compaction of the bed", "moist soil". The factors of seed germination are not taken into account: drip liquid water, soil and atmospheric temperatures and their daily fluctuations, oxygen intake and carbon dioxide removal, as well as the porosity of soil layers. Only one source is considered - capillary water and water from condensed vapors of humid atmospheric air is not considered. In the proposed model, these disadvantages are eliminated. Article "On the question of the structure of the optimal seedbed" on the Internet («К вопросу о строении оптимального семенного ложа" в Интернете).

Looking at The source of this study before a guy even watches it. You know that this video will be stereotypical ignorance About yield and cover crops with 0 talk about soil structure and soil. Zero talk about inputs, soil health will be mentioned but not measured, and full rate of chemicals, fungicides, fertilizer will still be used let's roll the tape Why did you select cereal rye and barley? You never spoke about a goal of using cover. What are they using to determine success or failure? If you are using yield? Yield is the worst way to quantify a define. Cover crop success or failure. what are you not doing in your current system? That would allow a cover crop to increase your yields? Especially on the first year of a trial. Oh well thank god you did a bunch of replicated trials. Let's mention water infiltration, reduced erosion, Reducing inputs because you have increased Nutrients in the soil. But give zero input of them to dollars in vs dollars out. Not one mention about being in the field sooner because you have less mud. Thousands of replicated trials have been done in iowa to show zero yield response between your conceal versus surface.

This guy isn't old enough to talk about the history of the corn head. Old ones were over complicated & ran at 45° angle; a real nightmare in downed corn. It was common to pasture the fields for dropped ears. Most of the problems solved by early '70s, remainder fixed by controlling corn borers. At this point just selling new complications rather than fixing problems.

Micros are very overlooked and or marketed wrong. Here 12 year's ago i asked local retail wisdom about using more micros, was to we are to far north, to cold, micros dont pay. Yep, local wisdom...have a problem toss NPK at it....but maybe a boron issue is causing the P symptom we see.. Aphid problems could be as simple as manganese or molybdenum, In my yield limited environment it seems PROPER micro and overall nutrient management is even more important Reduced bulk NPK up front, sap test plants for nutrient needs, haney test soil for N levels.

Conceal/furrow jet would have zero value in a soybean system. Have done a lot of in furrow trials back when bio forge and everyone and their brother was coming out with a liquid product came out, none of them products gave a response to beans, early application can affect vegitive growth but little to no bearing on yield. What are you using to determine what you need for foliar? Separate fungicide out from foliar. With a good foliar program and building soil health you won't need the fungicide. Haven't used fungicide for a number of years and plants are getting better. Correct fertilizing NPK does not make beans.

Think of all the variables when doing custom work as far as every Farmer's different hybrid selection planting date, planting depth, fertility program, population.. and at the end of the year there was only a few bushels difference between all of it
